BSkyB share price: Satellite broadcaster prepares set-top box revamp

Otmane El Rhazi,  Monday, April 28: British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc (LON:BSY) is said to be planning an overhaul of its set-top box technology to counter a threat to its subscription business from Internet-based television services from technology giants such as Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Inc (NADSDAQ:AMZN).

According to a report in The Telegraph on Saturday, the UK pay-TV provider has set up a special unit within the company, aimed at making it easier for customers to access programmes on any device. The unit, called ‘Project Ethan’, is working on new features for BSkyB’s set-to boxes, including the ability to store Sky + recordings on the cloud rather than local hard drives.
